He leased his brewery out to the team of Faulkner & Connor.įaulkner & Connor resumed operations under the name of the Black Hills Brewing and Malting Company. The prohibition forced Rosenkranz to cease brewing operations. Statewide Prohibition forced Henry to close the brewery, and the death of his wife, left him to raise their 7 children alone. ![]() However, in 1889 the Rozenkranz family suffered two serious blows. In the following five years the business prospered. Rozenkranz began bottling his beer under the brand name of Gold Nugget Beer. The additional space was used in creating a bottling facility. Needing a larger factory to keep up with demand, Rosenkranz purchased the Phoenix Iron Works in 1882. He continued as a sole proprietor of the brewery and expanded even further. With an influx of capital, Rosenkranz was able to buy out his partner in 1880. The unfortunate event gave Rosenkranz & Warner an opportunity to expand to new establishments. A massive fire wiped out most of the town and their competition. Two years after the brewery was established, tragedy hit Deadwood. The venture was an immediate success and soon kegs of their beer were delivered to saloons and beer halls around the region. Rozenkranz began his brewing operation in a small wooden structure with partner Dan Warner. The small town was perfect for its proximity to the towns of Deadwood and Lead. He chose a new location just a few miles away in Central City. With all the mining in the area, Rozenkranz didn’t trust the local water supply. ![]() Having the required skills, he set out to start his own brewery in Deadwood. In 1877 Henry Rosenkranz, a brewer from Montana, arrived in the booming town of Deadwood. Brewers quickly learned it was easier to get rich off of their “liquid gold” rather than digging for shiny rocks. Mining proved to be thirsty work as dozens of breweries sprung up. Towns and settlements began to litter the Hills inviting tens of thousands of fortune seekers hoping to get rich quick. Following the discovery of gold in 1876, the population in the Black Hills of the Dakota Territory boomed. ![]()
